Hyderabad: Telangana has sought the establishment of a Central Sheep Training Institute in the State to impart training on scientific sheep rearing, providing quality fodder, vaccines, medicines and sheep hostels.
Making a special mention in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, TRS MP G Ranjith Reddy said Telangana tops in sheep population in the country. The sheep population accounts for 59 per cent of the total livestock in the State and hence there was a need to establish the institute, he said.
Pointing out that India was ranked second in the world in sheep population with a population of 74 million constituting 14 per cent of total livestock, he said there were several economic benefits of sheep rearing, be it meat, wool, milk of manure. “There is a huge demand for sheep meat and manure. Besides, sheep rearing provides good employment and livelihood to 5 lakh poor and downtrodden families. They are, however, not getting the financial benefits they deserve because of unscientific rearing, reduced grazing lands and health-related issues of sheep,” he said.
