Hyderabad: Located in Maryville, Northwest Missouri State University is a public and four-year regional university. The 370-acre campus is based on the design for Forest Park at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

The university currently holds four Missouri Quality Awards, granted in 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2008 and is the only institution to achieve this feat. In 1987, Northwest unveiled its Electronic Campus Programme, the first such programme among public US colleges.


With 7,000 students, the university strives to prepare students for successful careers and has provided jobs to over 97 per cent of graduates within six months of graduating. The university has won 47 national championships since 2009 across all academic and athletic teams.

The university offers 127 undergraduate and 40 graduate programmes. The most popular majors at the university include Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services, Education, Psychology and Parks, Recreation, Leisure and Fitness Studies. Career Services offer an “Exploring Majors” fair where students can learn about different majors on campus and find which major is the perfect fit for them.

The various schools and departments of the university include the School of Health Sciences & Wellness, Melvin D & Valorie Booth School of Business, Department of Fine & Performing Arts, School of Agricultural Sciences, School of Education, Department of Natural Sciences, School of Computer Science & Information Systems, Department of Mathematics & Statistics, School of Communication & Mass Media, Department of Language, Literature and Writing, and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Northwest Missouri State University is ranked as one of the safest college towns in America by Safewise.

Its notable rankings are as follows: 31st among top public schools according to US News, 90th among top performers on Social Mobility according to US News, 103rd in Regional Universities Midwest according to US News, 600th in US College Ranks according to Times Higher Education, 668th in Country Rank according to UNI Rank, 1,852nd in World Rank according to UNI Rank, 207th among Top Public Universities in the USA according to Niche, 550th among Best Colleges in the USA according to Niche.

Rankings for Northwest Missouri State University in the 2021 Simply Best Colleges Lists — 759th in Best Colleges in the US, 264th in Best Public Colleges in the US, 19th in Best Colleges in Missouri, 8th in Best Public Colleges in Missouri, 9,999th in Best Value Colleges in the US, 52nd in Best Value Colleges in Missouri.

There are over 180 student organisations at Northwest encompassing social, religious, athletic, political, artistic, and performing activities and interests. The Intercultural and International Center houses over 10 multicultural student organisation groups, such as the International Student Organization, Asian Student Association, Hispanic American Leadership Organization, Amnesty International, among others. Northwest is an NCAA Division II university.

Among Northwest’s alumni are Jean Bartik, one of the original programmers for the ENIAC computer and a member of the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame. Other notable alumni include Pat Danner, former US representative from Missouri; Gary Gaetti, major league baseball player; Jamaica Rector, NFL wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals; Mike Shane, professional wrestler; Kim Reynolds, Governor of Iowa.
