Hyderabad: YSR Telangana Party president YS Sharmila Reddy and several of her supporters were taken into preventive custody by the police for protesting on the Warangal highway without permission and causing traffic congestion at Peerzadiguda in Medipally on Tuesday.
Police said M.Sandeep Kumar from the party had sought permission from Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat and Medipally police to stage a one-day hunger strike by Sharmila Reddy along with 500 people. Considering the request of the applicant and in spite of the busy schedule in view of the Ganesh idols immersion, Medipally police visited the proposed place of protest. However, with it abutting the national highway and no parking spaces, permission was denied. The organizers were requested to choose an alternate place.
However, on Tuesday, despite the police orders, Sharmila Reddy along with her party cadre staged a hunger strike at the said place. She and her supporters also came on the road and staged a protest, resulting in a traffic jam on the highway, said an official.
When they tried to proceed to the Medipally police station to stage a protest, Sharmila and her supporters were taken into preventive custody. While she was sent to her residence, others were taken to the police station, he added.
