Showrya creates history with win in Spanish national tennis final
Telangana’s Showrya Samala won the Spanish Men's National Tournament in Barcelona, becoming the first Indian boy to claim the title. He beat Spain’s Juan Pablo Robles in a thrilling final
Hyderabad: Showrya Samala of Telangana won the Spanish Men’s National Tournament in Barcelona, Spain, defeating Juan Pablo Robles of Spain 7–5, 5–7, 13–11 in the final.
He became the first Indian boy to win the title.
The 17-year-old Showrya is being trained by his father, Ashok Samala, and has been in Spain for the past few weeks.
In the first round, Showrya defeated Devarshit Neelam (USA) 6–4, 6–4, then beat Panshul Uboveja (Spain) 6–2, 6–4 in the second round. He overcame Jay Singh (Australia) 6–3, 6–4 in the quarterfinal and Jayin de Saram (Spain) 6–2, 6–3 in the semifinal.
