Siddipet: Finance Minister T Harish Rao said Siddipet had become the first zero-waste landfilling town in the country with the inauguration of a Bio-CNG plant on Monday. The administration could set up the plant in the town only because the denizens were segregating household waste into dry, wet and harmful waste efficiently, he noted.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Bio-CNG plant along with British Deputy High Commissioner Andrew Fleming at Bussapur on the outskirts of Siddipet town on Monday, Harish Rao said the government decided to set up the Bio-CNG Plant since landfiling of waste pollutes groundwater.
Stating that the town generates 55,000 kg of waste every day, the Minister said the CNG plant will help generate revenue from waste since the municipality will supply the gas to restaurants in Siddipet besides using the gas fuel to run Municipal garbage collection vehicles. He said the Municipality had won 14 national-level awards and 4 state-level awards in different categories. He hailed the Safai workers for their role in making a model in Swachhata and helping Municipality these awards. Stating that the citizens have also played a vital role in making the town a clean one, Rao called upon them to make Siddipet a model in development to the rest of the nation.
British Deputy High Commissioner Andrew Fleming, who went through the plant, was surprised to know that Siddipet was the only Municipality in Telangana that was not dumping waste in landfills. In fact, Siddipet is the only town in the country that was not dumping waste in landfills, he said and appreciated the fact that waste would now generate revenue.
MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy said that the Bio-CNG plant was inaugurated within 100 days as Harish Rao put in special efforts.
Zilla Parishad Chairperson V Roja Sharma, Additional Collector Muzammil Khan, RDO Antha Reddy, Municipal Chairperson K Manjula, Commissioner KV Raman Chary and others were present.
