Siddipet: Weavers Welfare Association, Siddipet, has demanded that the union government take back its decision to increase GST on textiles and handlooms from the existing 5 per cent to 12 per cent to save the weavers community.
Weavers from the Siddipet district gathered at Finance Minister T Harish Rao’s house in Siddipet on Wednesday to address the press on the issue.
Weavers’ leader Mera Sathanna said that the Centre’s decision will push the weaver’s community into a crisis since they will not be able to sell their clothes. “The weaver’s community used to face several hurdles till State formation in 2014,” Padmashali Sangham President Kamuni Rajesham said, adding that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao extended great support to weavers. Apart from giving pensions to weavers, the Chief Minister had also created employment for them by giving Bathukamma sarees work, he said.
Rajesham appealed to the union government to follow in the footsteps of Telangana government to revive weaving. “Otherwise, the Weavers will launch protests to force the Centre to withdraw its decision,” he said. Former Municipal Chairman K Rajanarsu, Market Chairman Pala Sairam, Municipal Councillor Mallikarju, Chippa Prabhakar, Addagatla Shekar, Mudigonda Srinivas, Raja Narendra and others were present.
