Hyderabad: Unless you have been living under a rock, you would have heard of the viral Sinhalese song Manike Mage Hithe by Sri Lankan singing sensation Yohani. Every Instagram Reel right now has the song playing in the background, and Yohani’s voice won the hearts of people around the globe. Right now, the singer is in Hyderabad for a performance and we caught up with her to discuss how she is feeling about becoming an overnight star, her upcoming projects, her favourite Bollywood actors, and more.
“I feel amazing coming to Hyderabad after my performance in Gurugram, and I am excited to explore the place after my performance,” shares Yohani, who is part of Zee Live’s event Supermoon #NowTrending ft Yohani.
Recalling a surprising encounter she had with a fan in Hyderabad, Yohani says, “A man came running towards me and asked me to sign his phone with a permanent marker. I was shocked and asked him twice if I should do it or not. It is the love from my fans that keeps me going.”
Yohani is hoping to show Sri Lankan music to Indians, especially Baila. The popular genre of music among Goan Catholics in Sri Lanka is played during parties and weddings accompanied by dancing. “I never expected that Manike Mage Hithe will go so viral. It was a surprise for the entire team and an amazing experience for all of us. My family is super proud of me,” says Yohani.
Music has always been a part of Yohani’s life ever since her childhood. But she took it seriously only five years ago when she started her YouTube channel. “I switched from pursuing a career in accounting to pursuing music full-time in the year 2016. I am currently getting professionally trained in music,” shares the singing sensation.
Yohani loves adventure in life – be it learning horse-riding or sky-diving. “I have also travelled a lot; I guess I’ve been to over 16 countries. I love meeting new people, exploring different cultures, and learning new music along the way,” shares the 28-year-old singer, who will be next performing in Oman, Dubai, London, and the Maldives.
Yohani’s upcoming album ‘Kella’ is already ready, and the first song will release on October 9. “I enjoy Bollywood movies – my favourite actors are Priyanka Chopra, Tiger Shroff, and many others,” concludes Yohani.
