Singur project repairs lag, only 620 metres of earthen bund completed

Sangareddy: The storing of the water in Singur project for optimum level even during the next monsoon appears to be bleak as the irrigation authorities could complete the repairing works on only 620 meters of earthen bund of the project against the total length of 2,416 meters.
Following the recommendations of the national dam safety review panel (DSRP), the irrigation department took up repairing works on 2,416 meters of earthen dam on either side of the crest gates. The repairing works commenced in May 2026 after completing all the necessary processes, aiming to complete the works by 2027. However, the government granted Rs 16 crore for the works while the Hyderabad-based Hima Sai Constructions bagged the contract.
According to sources in the irrigation department, they could complete the works on only 620 meters of earthen dam while the work on 200 meters were under progress. The works on the remaining 1,596 meters were yet to be taken up. SS
Sources maintained that the contractor had hardly completed 35 per cent of physical work as on today which makes the completion of the work by the beginning of June 2027 appears to be slender. During the DSRP committee visits to Singur in December, 2024 and June, 2025 the expert committee noticed the damages on the upstream slope revetment. The committee had recommended the Telangana government to take up the repairing works without any further delay, saying that it may wash away if any heavy flood is received.
The government had constituted an expert committee from irrigation, HMWSSB and Mission Bagiratha to look into the recommendations made by DSRP in November 2025. Following the recommendations of the committee, they depleted the water in a phased manner, to allow the contractor to take up the repairing works.
The delay will not only affect the farmers of ayacut in Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy, it would also make the job of HMWSSB and Mission Bagiratha officials to supply drinking water to Hyderabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Siddipet and Kamareddy districts.
While the 7.70 TMCft of water from the Singur used for drinking water purposes, the 14.41 TMCft water is used for irrigation purposes every year against the project’s full storage capacity of 29.91 TMCft.
