Hyderabad: From the city of minarets and architectural marvels, Hyderabad is slowly evolving into one with skyscrapers as well, with a number of engineering marvels coming up across the city.

As the city sees more and more high-rise buildings, the State government is simultaneously developing infrastructure to ensure civic amenities. While construction of 67 high-rise buildings, most of them in the western part of the city, were approved in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits from April 2020 to March 2021, dozens of them mushroomed in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) limits too. Kokapet, Puppalguda, Narsingi and parts of Financial District are some areas in HMDA where skyscrapers are being built.

Currently, in these areas, construction of roads, underground drainage, water supply distribution networks, electrification and illumination are underway. These civic amenities are in addition to major projects that include new flyovers, Road over Bridges (RoBs), Road under Bridges (RuBs) and Foot over Bridges (FoBs). HMDA officials said Kokapet was one such example where provision of civic amenities including supply of drinking water and underground drainage network was being taken up within the layout measuring 533 acres. These civic amenities were being developed up at an estimated cost of Rs 265 crore.

Another area where exclusive works to boost drinking water supply are on is Gachibowli. This year, works worth Rs 20 crore were done to supply water through pipelines. The upcoming US Consulate and Myscape (residential houses) in Nanakramguda, TNGOS Colony in Gachibowli and Secretariat Colony in Manikonda are some of the localities where new waterlines were laid this year.

The Sunkishala Intake Project with Rs 1,450 crore, construction of 18 km of 3,000 mm diameter pipeline with Rs 285 crore to ensure supply of sufficient drinking water to Kolluru 2BHK Housing Colony near Kokapet and laying of 3,000 mm diameter pipeline from Tellapur Junction to Nalagandla are the three major works taken up by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to provide sufficient water in the fast growing city. Meanwhile, 17 new STPs that are being installed will treat 376.5 MLD of waste.

It is not only water supply and sewerage but traffic assessment also is on the agenda before approving high-rise buildings, according to GHMC and HMDA officials. Applications seeking permission for construction of buildings over 50 stories have been put on hold citing traffic density where permits for high rise buildings were granted.

To address traffic needs in the coming days, the GHMC has set April 2022 as deadline to complete 10 projects being built under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) at an estimated cost of Rs 1,158 crore. Among them, four are located in the Central Business District and the IT corridor. Meanwhile, plans are being drawn to have 21 FoBs ready in two months. Four of these facilities that are under various stages of construction are in the western part of the city where these buildings are coming up.
