Hyderabad: A major effort to tackle the threat of urban flooding is progressing across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits with 52 works under the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) being underway at a brisk pace.
Seventeen of these works are being executed on a war footing and tenders have been floated for the remaining works, with most of them expected to be completed before May this year, according to Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi, who spoke to the media on the occasion of her completing one year in office on Thursday.

The SNDP, launched by the State government specifically targeting a solution for urban flooding, has the stormwater drain network in the city being revamped at a cost of Rs 858.32 crore in the first phase. Concerted efforts are on to speed up the works, with corporators along with GHMC officials regularly monitoring the desilting of nalas to make sure there is a free flow of rainwater through these water channels during downpours, the Mayor said.
On the other developmental works being executed in the GHMC, she said equal priority was being given to projects that safeguard the health of people in addition to the development of infrastructure under the Strategic Road Development Plan and Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme.
“The MAUD Minister has responded positively to a request to sanction additional Basti Dawakhanas with the plan being to have at least two such clinics in every ward,” the Mayor said. Telangana Ku Haritha Haram, improved sanitation, foot overbridges, Covid containment measures and activities to improve livelihood for street vendors were some of the activities underway in GHMC, she said.
Annapurna canteens
Refurbished Annapurna canteens equipped with seating arrangements will also dot different parts of the city soon. “At the Annapurna canteen equipped seating arrangements, meals are being enjoyed by the needy in addition to the poor. The decent ambience has added value to the State government’s initiative and the number of canteens is being increased,” said the Mayor, who released a book detailing the development activities in GHMC.

Out of the one lakh 2BHK houses proposed in GHMC limits under the 2BHK housing scheme, 65,000 houses have already been built and the houses will soon be allocated to beneficiaries, the Mayor added.
