Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s S Fidel R Snehit reached the semi-finals of the Under-21 category of 2021 ITTF Czech International Open being held in Olomouc today. He lost to Andras Csaba of Hungary 1-3 (3-11, 5-11. 11-9, 9-11) in the semi-finals.

Snehit beat Osiro Pedro of Switzerland 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8) in the quarterfinals and defeated Promberger Jonas of Austria 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-4) in the pre-quarters.

Snehit is the only Indian paddler to progress and reach the semi-finals in the tournament. The top seed Manav Thakkar lost to the same Andras Csaba (Hungary) 2-3 and Snehit’s doubles partner Jeet Chandra lost to Picard Vincent (France) 1-3 in pre-quarters.

Snehit, who trains with Somnath Ghosh, will now play the main round of men’s singles and doubles of this tournament. “I was determined to make it to the podium finish here. I chalked out a good strategy with my coach, who is with me in Olomouc but I narrowly missed it. The last two sets against Csaba were very close and I missed a good opportunity here,” he said.
