Soorma Hockey Club beat Hyderabad Toofans in shootout at HIL 2025-26
Soorma Hockey Club defeated Hyderabad Toofans 3-1 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw in the Men’s Hockey India League at Chennai. Harmanpreet Singh and Amandeep Lakra scored in regulation time, while Soorma sealed victory through shootout brilliance
Chennai: Soorma Hockey Club registered a thrilling 3-1 shootout victory against Hyderabad Toofans after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh (20’) scored for Soorma Hockey Club, while Amandeep Lakra (46’) netted the equaliser for Hyderabad Toofans.
The first quarter saw several circle entries and chances, but defenders on both sides held firm. Soorma started strong and won the first penalty corner in the third minute, but Harmanpreet Singh’s attempt was blocked.
Moments later, Soorma made two good attempts on goal, but Hyderabad goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh produced back-to-back saves. In the eighth minute, Hyderabad earned three penalty corners in a row, but Soorma’s defence stood tall.
In the second quarter, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner with a low dragflick in the 20th minute to give Soorma the lead. Hyderabad came close in the 34th minute when Lakra’s flick went wide. Four minutes later, Jeremy Hayward’s penalty corner attempt for Soorma was again denied by Bikramjit Singh.
Hyderabad equalised in the final quarter as Lakra scored with a powerful dragflick in the 46th minute. In the 54th minute, Devindar Walmiki’s incisive pass found Tim Brand, whose deflection missed narrowly.
Hyderabad pressed late, but Soorma goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch made a crucial save to keep the scores level.
In the shootout, Soorma won 3-1 with Harmanpreet Singh and Nicolas Keenan scoring. Toofans’ goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh conceded a penalty stroke during Nicolas della Torre’s attempt, which Harmanpreet converted to seal the win and bonus point for Soorma.
