M Jagannadham, a retired employee of Panchayat Raj Department, from Mothinagar, donating a cheque for Rs 5,000 towards CMRF, to Minister KT Rama Rao at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday.

Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday instructed officials to speed up relief and restoration works in rain-affected areas of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and surrounding areas.

The Minister, who held a review meeting with GHMC, HMWSSB, Electricity and Municipal Administration department officials on the ongoing relief and restoration works in rain-affected areas, asked them to expedite the works and to strive towards restoring normalcy in these areas. He asked officials to provide helpline numbers to citizens through which they could ask the GHMC to clear the debris and flood-related trash that got accumulated during the heavy rains. The officials were also directed to rope in resident welfare associations and NGOs for more assistance in providing relief measures.

Rao asked officials to take up road repair works in each circle in GHMC and also to immediately start repair works on all major roads to avoid inconvenience to citizens apart from retro fittings to all flyovers for the rainwater to flow down easily. Instructions were also issued to clear the garbage that had accumulated in nalas during the recent rains.

The officials informed Rao that all suggestions and inputs given by the Irrigation department were being taken into consideration while repairing the damaged lakes. GHMC officials told the Minister that the financial assistance of Rs 10,000 was being handed over to rain and flood-affected families at a fast pace. They also stated that additional municipal workers were appointed to take up sanitation drives across the areas apart from spraying disinfectants, collecting garbage and clearing stagnated water.

Through special sanitation drives, about 18,000 metric tonnes of waste was collected so far, the officials informed the Minister.

Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, MA&UD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar, GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar, EVDM Director Viswajit Kampati and officials from HMWSSB and Electricity departments were present.
