Hyderabad: What began as a short trip to attend a family function ended in heartbreak for two families and left several others shattered after an allegedly high-speed road accident claimed the lives of two youths at Medipally in the suburbs on Wednesday, early hours.
The accident occurred around 2 am near Metro Pillar No 97 when a car carrying eight friends and reportedly driven at a high speed lost control and crashed into an elevated metro pillar. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was crushed beyond recognition, leaving little chance for the occupants seated in the front.
Two youths, identified as Sai Varun (23) and Nikhil (22), suffered fatal injuries and died on the spot. Three others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a private hospital, where one of them is stated to be in a critical condition. The remaining occupants escaped with minor injuries.
Passersby alerted the police, following which emergency teams reached the spot and shifted the injured to hospital. The bodies were later shifted to Gandhi Hospital for an autopsy.
According to the police, the group, all in their early twenties, had travelled from Moula Ali to attend a function and later set out to drop friends at IT Pocharam before returning. The youths were students pursuing engineering and other degree courses in different colleges across Hyderabad and hailed from Wanaparthy district. All of them, close friends, had gathered after a long gap to attend the function and spend time together.
According to Medipally Police Inspector R Govinda Reddy, preliminary findings indicate that the car was being driven at a very high speed, causing the driver to lose control while negotiating the stretch near the metro pillar. They are also examining whether alcohol consumption played any role in the accident.
Sai Varun was a BSc Biotechnology student, and his father, Rajasekhar, works as an RTC driver and his mother, Sandhya Rani, is a homemaker. Family members who rushed to Gandhi Hospital after receiving the news were seen inconsolable with the sudden loss of their children.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death due to negligence and endangering human life and is being investigated.
