Sports and fitness infra in the offing in GHMC limits

Hyderabad: A series of facilities for sports and fitness enthusiasts is on the cards in the city. A total of 19 facilities that include sports complexes, auditoriums, indoor stadiums and swimming pools are being developed in different parts of the city with an estimated cost of Rs 86.61 crore by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
Among 19 works, the construction of seven facilities with an estimated cost of Rs 22.10 crore have been completed and six sports arenas being built with Rs 47.42 crore are under progress while the remaining projects are under various stages of completion.
The completed works include multipurpose sports complexes in Sanath Nagar Play Ground, Adikmet, Kukatpally Housing Board Colony phase 6 and Audaiah Nagar playground in Secunderabad. These are in addition to the swimming pool built in Owaisi Play Ground, Golconda and an indoor game facility centre at R K Nagar Malkajgiri where the works have been completed.
The civic body in a press release said that construction of sports facilities was taken up for providing recreation facilities to the public and to encourage sportspersons. Apart from Cricket, Table Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Football, Skating and Cycling are some of the games citizens can enjoy at these places. Besides the games, Yoga, gym and gymnastic facilities are also in store for fitness enthusiasts.
This infrastructure being developed by the State government to encourage sports is on par with services offered by private companies. The construction of a sports park in the TSIIC area, Gajularamaram ward is one such example where the cricket court is equipped with artificial turfing. Similarly, the sports complex at Katedan has a swimming pool equipped with change rooms and other facilities for swimmers.
Meanwhile, to ensure the facilities are utilised by people from all sections of society, GHMC has decided to charge a nominal monthly fee irrespective of the sport. If the person wants to hire a coach, an additional amount will be levied. These 19 facilities are being developed besides the existing 12 sports complexes, seven swimming pools, 521 playgrounds and other sport facilities in GHMC limits.
