Hyderabad: The Srisailam Left Bank Hydro-electric Station (SLBHES) resumed operations on Monday, almost two months after it was shut following a major fire mishap on August 21 that led to the death of nine employees, including two from a private firm, besides damaging all the six units.

Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy and TS Transco Chairman and Managing Director D Prabhakar Rao turned on units one and two of the six-unit 900 MW hydroelectric power plant, generating 300 MW of power without any glitches. “Repairs to the power plant were taken up immediately as per the directions of the Chief Minister. Power generation at the SLBHES resumed today (Monday) after a week-long trial run,” Prabhakar Rao said.

The entire plant, however, is expected to be functional in a phased manner. “Of the six units of 150 MW each, unit 4 suffered the most damage and is expected to resume power generation around May next year. Units 3, 5 and 6 will become operational within three months,” SLBHES Chief Engineer Prabhakar Rao told ‘Telangana Today’.

The Srisailam Left Bank unit, with an installed capacity of 900 MW, was producing 600 MW every day till August 21, as there were heavy inflows into the reservoir from the Jurala Project. To fill the gap created by the shutdown of the important hydel power unit, the TSGENCO increased power generation at the Nagarjuna Sagar hydel unit. The 815.6-MW unit of the Nagarjuna Sagar produced 700 MW to maintain the total hydel generation at 1,000 MW per day.
