Hyderabad: Sruthi Venepalli, eight-time national gold medalist, has been elected as an Executive Committee (EC) member of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) during the federation’s Annual General Assembly held in Ahmedabad.

In line with the revised norms of the Government of India, the strength of the federation’s Executive Committee has been streamlined from 45 members to just 12. It is a matter of immense pride that Sruthi Venepalli has been chosen as one among these 12 eminent members, representing the collective strength of 29 states across India.

A distinguished sportsperson, Sruthi hails from Kodad and currently resides in Hyderabad. She has an inspiring academic background — matriculated from Telangana Sports School, Hakimpet, completed engineering in Electronics and Communications from Anurag Engineering College, MBA in HR from Sikkim Manipal University, and LLB from Mahatma Gandhi Law College, Hyderabad, according to a Telangana Weightlifting Association media release.

Some of the high points of Sruthi’s career include being Best Athlete of India (1997) in the under-14 category, national record holder in long jump (1998) and pentathlon (1997), and Best Sportswoman of the Year (2003) at the university level.

On her election, Sruthi said: “It is a great honor to be elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Indian Weightlifting Federation. I dedicate this achievement to my father Venepalli Srinivasa Rao, coaches, mentors, and the entire sporting fraternity of Telangana who supported me throughout my journey. My focus will be on strengthening grassroots weightlifting, creating more opportunities for young talent, and ensuring India’s presence shines on the global stage.”
