Hyderabad: With Covid cases registering an unprecedented surge in the last one week across Telangana, the health authorities on Saturday urged people to stay indoors and postpone all religious functions, birthdays, marriages and avoid participating in any gatherings or political rallies till the end of June.

The Director of Public Health (DPH) Dr G Srinivasa Rao on Saturday said that super-spreader events like people gathering at a place in large numbers with scant respect to Covid precautions coupled with new variants of the SARs-CoV-2 have pushed Covid cases to a new high in the State.

On Friday, Telangana recorded its biggest ever jump in Covid infections, since the first Covid cases that was reported on March 2, 2020, with health authorities reporting 4446 new cases and 12 fatalities.

“To control the rising cases, we urge people to voluntarily stay indoors and only to venture out if it is very much necessary. Please avoid or postpone celebrations such as family gatherings, birthday parties or participating in any kind of religious events and political rallies for the next six to eight weeks,” Dr Rao said.

“Last year, during lockdown we have seen how people, specially from the economically weaker sections have struggled to make their ends meet,” he said adding, “that’s the reason why, instead of undergoing financial suffering through lockdowns, we are urging the general public to voluntarily stay indoors and only to venture out, if it is inevitable.”
