Hyderabad: Thousands of Microsoft employees, including those working in Hyderabad campus and elsewhere in India, are in a dilemma whether to continue in their jobs or accept a voluntary exit offer (VEO) rolled out by the company as part of its cost-cutting measures.
The offer, which reportedly covers around 60,000 employees in India, Canada, United States and United Kingdom, extends shortlisted employees financial support and career transition resources if they chose to leave the company voluntarily.
According to some employees in India who received the offer on Tuesday, the package covers six months of base pay, three months of notice period base pay and one year of full health insurance cover. The offer has reportedly been rolled out irrespective of the employees’ performance.
One of the employees in Hyderabad campus has been reportedly offered a Rs.11 lakh package to quit the position. As per the Microsoft statement in December 2025, the company has 22,000 employees across Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune Gurugram, Nodia and other cities in the country.
Sharing their experience on Reddit, one user said they were not anxious after going through the VEO email.
“So, I opened my work email today morning and saw the VEO email without a context, because I stopped using Blind long ago. Took a deep breath, thought that my time has finally come… Surprisingly I didn’t feel the anxiety and fear that I thought I’d have gotten by looking at a “close to layoff” email. For a second, I was running ideas about my next plan, how to start prepping, etc,” a Redditt user True_Eye4109 posted.
The user said their entire organisation received the VEO email and it was not related to performance alone.
Another Reddit user sought advice on whether to accept the company’s VEO or continue working. The 29-year-old post stated that the package included six months of basic salary.
“I’ve been burnt out for a while now and honestly just want a break to reset. But I’m torn between two options: Take the exit package now or stay put until they lay off,” a post by the Celestial_Theos read.
The VEO from Microsoft has also made employees from other companies restless. “I’m not a Microsoft employee, but I am a software engineer with 9 years of experience. Yesterday’s voluntary exit option announcement by Microsoft has made me restless. Layoffs have been going on since 2022 now. Infinite money is being dumped into AI which hasn’t proved to be profitable yet and still everyone is trying to achieve non-existent AI efficiency. I really could not sleep last night,” another user captainrushingin posted.
