Stem cell therapy warning: NMC, Health Ministry bar unproven treatments

Hyderabad: Families seeking miracle cures for conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), spinal cord injuries, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis through stem cell treatments have been warned by central health regulatory authorities not to fall for unverified therapies.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Union Health Ministry, in fresh guidelines, have barred private hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and doctors in Hyderabad and elsewhere from marketing and administering stem cell therapies to patients as standard treatments for such medical conditions.
Under the fresh guidelines, doctors and hospitals are strictly barred from offering stem cell therapy as a routine commercial treatment for any illness outside the narrow, government-approved list. Routine clinical use of stem cells will be legally permitted exclusively for approved conditions, which are primarily restricted to certain blood disorders, specific leukemias and lymphomas, and select bone marrow or immune system diseases.
Moreover, the fresh guidelines make it clear that using stem cells for unapproved healthcare conditions outside a strictly monitored research setting lacks scientific backing and will be treated as professional misconduct.
For the general public and families navigating the prospects of stem cell treatments, the fresh warning means that private clinics and hospitals can no longer market or administer stem cell therapies as standard treatments for many unapproved medical conditions.
Doctors or medical institutions found flouting these rules face severe disciplinary consequences, which can include heavy penalties, formal inquiries by State Medical Councils and the complete removal of a practitioner’s name from the medical register, the Union Health Ministry advisory clarified.
Senior doctors in Hyderabad and members of the State Medical Council have urged patients, their families and caregivers to remain cautious of private clinics promising unproven cellular cures.
Under current protocols, legitimate stem cell research can only be conducted through approved clinical trials that follow strict ethical standards, which mandate free treatment for participants and safety provisions, rather than profit-driven commercial packages, the advisory made clear.
