Hyderabad: Telangana requested the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to stop Andhra Pradesh from releasing Krishna water through Pothireddypadu (PRP) Head Regulator and Handri Neeva Sujala Sravanti (HNSS) immediately and account for all the diverted water during the surplus period by AP against its share.

It also urged that Telangana may be permitted to carry over part of its share to the next water year through storage in common reservoirs.

In a letter to board Chairman, Telangana Irrigation and CAD Department, Engineer-in-Chief (General), C Muralidhar said water diverted from PRP till date was 76.39 TMC and from HNSS was 9.28 TMC by AP for the current water year 2021-22 from June 1, 2021, to September 20, 2021.

He said that Srisailam reservoir was a hydroelectric project and as per the inter-State agreement in 1976 and Central Water Commission (CWC) approval in 1981, only 34 TMC of flood flows were permitted to be diverted to outside the basin from Srisailam reservoir at +880 ft and above level.

“Since 85.67 TMC of water has already been diverted so far, we urge the KRMB to stop releases by AP through PRP and HNSS immediately,” Muralidhar said.
