Student dies, 53 fall ill after alleged adverse reaction to chloroquine tablets in Andhra Pradesh
A student died and 53 others fell ill after reportedly developing adverse reactions following administration of chloroquine tablets at a health camp in Gollaguppa, Andhra Pradesh. Twenty students were seriously ill and undergoing treatment at Bhadrachalam Area Hospital.
Kothagudem: A student died and as many as 53 students taken ill at Gollaguppa in Yetapaka mandal of Polavaram district in Andhra Pradesh due an alleged adverse reaction to chloroquine tablets.
The students were rushed to Government Area Hospital at Bhadrachalam in the district late on Tuesday night. One of the students was said to be in an unconscious State and 20 were seriously ill, the doctors said.
According to sources, a student, Paddam Roja died after suffering from malaria last Friday at the village. Following which the local doctors organised a health camp at Gollaguppa and chloroquine tablets were administered to 73 students of a government school and an Anganwadi Centre.
A second standard student Madavi Jamuna (7) suffered from vomiting at home and was rushed to Lakshmipuram Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Polavaram where she was declared brought dead. Her body was shifted to Bhadrachalam for autopsy.
The Area Hospital Superintendent Dr. Rajashekhar Reddy, Dr. Ramakrishna, retired doctor Koti Reddy and doctors from nearby areas have been treating the students. Chintoor ITDA Project Officer Shubham Nokhwal and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) B Hemanth Kumar rushed to Bhadrachalam to monitor the situation.
