Hyderabad: A young man from Punjagutta was allegedly cheated and extorted by an unidentified person in a case of cybersex fraud on social media.
The victim, a student in his mid-twenties, received a friend request on Facebook from an unknown person with a woman’s profile picture in 2020. He accepted the request thinking it to be a woman and they began chatting on Facebook Messenger and the friendship blossomed, with both exchanging mobile phone numbers and chatting on WhatsApp as well.
Police said the suspect slowly gained his trust and eventually started sexchats with the victim regularly and using various apps, and sent sexually explicit pictures and videos. The victim, who believed it to be a woman, fell into the trap and started chatting half-dressed and shared his private pictures and videos as well. The suspect, who saved these, then began threatening and blackmailing him. They first shared it on a social media platform and shared the link to the victim, who was anxious and requested them to delete it. They demanded Rs 50,000, for doing so.
“After negotiations, the victim sent Rs 25,000 to the bank details shared by the suspect. Within a few days after receiving the money, they again started harassing and blackmailing him,” police said.
The youngster who sensed danger approached the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police and lodged a complaint. A case has been booked and investigation is on.
