Hyderabad: Tension prevailed on the JNTU-Hyderabad campus here on Friday when a large number of students staged a protest, demanding action against those allegedly responsible for the death of Divya, an EEE third-year student.
According to Students’ Protection Forum (SPF) activists, J Dilip and Rahul Naik, who called for a campus bandh, Divya was suffering from health issues and was unable to attend classes for several days.
Divya’s parents, along with their daughter, visited the university and submitted medical reports and requested attendance exemption considering her health condition, the student leaders said. Student leaders alleged that professors refused to grant attendance relaxation, which led Divya into emotional distress and she died by suicide at her home.
The protesters accused the university administration of failing to support students dealing with health issues and claimed that such negligence contributed to the tragedy.
The SPF demanded immediate suspension of those allegedly involved, compensation of Rs1 crore for Divya’s family and accountability from the university. They threatened to intensify protests if the university administration fails to respond promptly.
Student leaders Eravelli Jagan, Durga Prasad, Sagar Naik, Srinu, Tanuju, Aditya, Arjun, Hemanth, Raj Kumar, Anand, Sai Kumar, Rohith, Chandu, Stalin and Ruthvik were among those who participated in the protest.
