Kothagudem: Student unions in the district have demanded that the State government relocate Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Gurukul School/Junior College (Girls) being run in Khammam to Tekulapalli mandal headquarters in the district.

The gurukul, which was sanctioned and inaugurated at Tekulapalli in the academic year 2016-17, was shifted to Khammam owing to lack of facilities locally and has been run at the local, privately owned Daripally Anantharamulu Engineering College campus.

For the past ten years, the institute has been operated in Khammam even as several student unions and people’s organisations have demanded that the government relocate it to Tekulapalli, where it was originally sanctioned.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Progressive Democratic Students’ Union (PDSU) district president Burra Veerabhadram stated that students are facing severe hardships because the gurukul, which belongs to Yellandu division, is being operated in Khammam.

Running the institute in Khammam rather than at the designated Tekulapalli mandal headquarters has created significant administrative confusion, and officials from both the districts are failing to pay attention, leading to the neglect of students’ problems, he noted.

The students are often confused about whom to approach or which official bears responsibility for addressing their issues. Taking advantage of administrative inconveniences, the officials are acting negligently towards students’ problems, Veerabhadram alleged.

He complained that the government-mandated menu is not being fully implemented; chicken and mutton have not been served to students for the past four months due to lack of monitoring by higher officials.

The officials imposed a fine of Rs 500 on students for merely touching a flowering plant. Intimidating students or imposing financial burdens on them on the pretext of discipline is inappropriate.

Veerabhadram demanded Yellandu MLA Koram Kanakaiah respond immediately and facilitate the shifting of the gurukul to Tekulapalli, as operating the institute in Khammam is causing severe difficulties for students, parents, and officials alike.
