Mancherial: Folk and film songs depicting the plight of farmers amid the prolonged dry spell and drought conditions prevailing across Telangana are resurfacing on social media platforms. In one such instance, a folk song recreated by students of a private school in Mahadevpur in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district has recently gone viral on social media.

Farmers have been waiting for rains after sowing paddy, cotton, soybean and other crops across Telangana. Moved by the plight of farmers, students of Greenwood Concept School performed the Kappathalli ritual to appease the Rain God on July 14. They then recreated the popular folk song ‘Chinukamma’ from the movie Bathukamma. They enacted the roles of farmers in the video.

The song was later posted on the Instagram handle of the school’s Hindi teacher, Ram Goud Ranguwar. The video was widely shared, garnering 44 lakh views in just four days. It was also circulated by thousands of users on WhatsApp. The students instantly shot to fame for coming up with the creative work and reflecting the pitiable condition of farmers.

“Most of the students are from farming backgrounds. They are aware of the challenges faced by farmers. They came forward to act in the song after participating in the Kappathalli ritual. The ritual was organised to let the students know not only about our culture but also the relationship between humans and nature,” Correspondent of the school Ch Srinivas Reddy told Telangana Today.

The students and the management of the school were praised by social media users for their attempt to capture the hardships of farmers through their creative work. Nicey, a Class IX student who led the students in the song, in particular, breathed life into her role. They thanked those who liked and viewed the song and promised to create similar thought-provoking content in the future.

Meanwhile, rural people are resorting to ancient rituals following the dry spell. They are conducting not only the Kappathalli ritual but also celebrating Bathukamma festivals and performing Jalabhishekam to village deities, seeking rains in one or another corner of the State. They believe that these rituals would bring rains and help prevent crops from withering.
