Suryapet: Eight tractor drivers who took to thievery after they lost livelihood due to the pandemic, were arrested by the police on charges of lifting vehicles. Police recovered 13 tractor trolleys and tyres total worth Rs 13 lakh from their possession.
The arrested were Darangula Venkatesh and darangula Chanti of Naikangudem and Pallapu Srinu, Darangula Srihari, Darangula Venkanna, Rapani Gopi, Rapani Sailu and Orsu Veera Babu.
Mothey Sub-Inspector B Praveen Kumar said that they were taken into custody on suspicion at 6 am during a vehicle check up near Mamillagudem. All the eight arrested were travelling in a tractor and coming towards Mamillagidem from Khammam side.
He said the arrsted persons lost their jobs due to Covid-19 lockdown and borrowed money from others to meet the expenses of their families. To clear their debts, they formed themselves into a gang and resorted to thefts. The gang members stole trolleys of the tractors and tyres at different places in the district.
