Suryapet: Farmers on Wednesday conducted rastha roko on Suryapet-Thorrur road at Nemmikal in Athmakur (S) mandal demanding release of water to 22L sub-canal of SRSP canal. Scores of farmers from Kandalavarigudem and Athmakur blocked the road by parking the tractors on it. This has caused traffic jam on the stretch for half-an-hour. They also raised slogans demanding the release of water to 22L sub-canal to provide irrigation facility to hundreds of acres in Athmakur(S) mandal.

Speaking on the occasion, Velpula Venkanna, a farmer, said water was released to DBM-71 main canal of SRSP by the officials to provide irrigation facility for Yasangi crop season. But, water was not released to 22L sub-canal of SRSP, which was nothing but denial of irrigation facility to hundreds of farmers. If water is not released to 22L sub-canal, the transplanted nurseries of paddy would dry up in hundreds of acres in the mandal. It would cause financial loss to the farmers, he lamented.

He demanded that the officials immediately release water to 22L sub-canal of SRSP to protect the interests of the farmers. On receiving information, Athmakur(S) police rushed to the place and assured that they would take initiative to resolve the issue by bringing the matter to the higher officials. Following the request of the police, the farmers withdrew their rastha roko, he added.
