Suryapet: Residents of Ramoji thanda on Thursday staged a protest in front of the Athmakur (S) Police Station after a youth allegedly fell ill after interrogation by the police in a theft case.
High tension prevailed at the police station when several tribals tried to attack the Sub-Inspector. According to the protestors, the police took Gogulothu Veera Shaker into custody and allegedly tortured him physically.
Reacting to the allegations, Athmakur(S) Sub-Inspector, M Lingam said “A series of theft cases were reported in villages located near Ramoji thanda in the last two months. Based on CCTV footage, we identified one Naveen, a resident of Ramoji thanda and took him into custody.” During the interrogation, Naveen revealed the names of 20 youths including Veera Shaker, who was involved in the theft, the SI said.
“We called Veera Shaker to the police station and inquired him about the theft case. Protestors allegations of torture are baseless,” he added.
