Suryapet: Hundred of villagers on Tuesday staged rasta roko at Jajireddygudem on National Highway No. 365 in the district demanding construction of an underpass in the village to prevent accidents. Traffic came to a standstill for over two hours on the NH near the village following the protest.
The Sarpanch, ward members, MTPCs and residents, irrespective of political affiliations, participated in the protest holding placards that contained pictures of persons who died in accidents on the National Highway near their village. The curving road near Jajireddygudem has turned into a death trap going by the number of recent accidents taking place there, they said.
In the last one month, five persons died and more than 20 others were injured in accidents that took place at the spot. In addition to this, 10 cattle also died in the accident. NH 365 was the first highway laid using concrete mix and cement instead of bitumen.
The villagers said even minor accidents were causing serious injuries because of the road condition. Construction of an underpass near Jajireddygudem would prevent accidents, they said.
The Tasildar and Assistant Engineer of R&B rushed to the spot and held talks with the leaders of the village. After the officials assured that a proposal would be sent to the government for construction of an underpass, the villagers dispersed from the spot.
