Suvendu Adhikari attacked Mamata Banerjee over her proposed Delhi visit for an INDIA bloc meeting, alleging a “new conspiracy” with CPI(M) leaders. The BJP leader’s remarks came amid Opposition coordination over the Election Commission and Special Intensive Revision

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Mamata Banerjee over her proposed visit to New Delhi for an INDIA bloc meeting, alleging that she was moving ahead with “Jamaat in one hand and dimagi naxals in the other”.

Adhikari alleged that the former chief minister was travelling to Delhi to work out a “new conspiracy” with CPI(M) leaders and urged the Delhi Police and the Intelligence Bureau to keep a close watch on her activities, escalating the BJP’s attack on the emerging Opposition coordination over the Election Commission.

Adhikari’s remarks came as Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and CPI(M), stepped up coordination over their demand for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the controversy surrounding the functioning of the poll panel and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Banerjee has spoken to CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and is expected to attend an INDIA bloc meeting at Delhi’s Constitution Club on September 30 to discuss the Opposition’s strategy on the issue.

Taking a swipe at the former chief minister’s outreach to the Left, Adhikari alleged that her Delhi visit was aimed at working out a “new conspiracy” with CPI(M) leaders.

“People have gone to Delhi in the past. She is going to Delhi to hatch a new conspiracy with CPI(M) leaders,” Adhikari said on the sidelines of the Janata Darbar programme at the state BJP office.

“I will request the Delhi Police and Central IB to keep a watch so that there is no meeting again with any anti-national force,” he said.

“Her main advisers now are the dimagi naxals. Jamaat in one hand and dimagi naxals in the other — she is moving ahead with both,” Adhikari alleged.

The comments came against the backdrop of an unusual political convergence between the TMC and CPI(M), which have been bitter rivals in West Bengal for decades.

Baby has reached out to non-NDA parties seeking wider Opposition cooperation over the Election Commission, while Banerjee has responded positively and spoken to him by phone.

The proposed Delhi meeting is expected to deliberate on the Opposition’s demand for action against Gyanesh Kumar and its broader response to the SIR exercise.

Opposition parties have been seeking greater scrutiny of the poll process following reports of differences within the Election Commission over the exercise.

The political sparring over the proposed Opposition unity also comes days before the October 6 bypolls to Nandigram and Rejinagar, adding another layer to the increasingly charged political atmosphere in Bengal.

On Tuesday, Adhikari also welcomed the Calcutta High Court’s dismissal of a petition filed by the Congress challenging the nomination affidavit of BJP’s Nandigram candidate Hasirani Rath. The Congress had questioned discrepancies relating to Rath’s age and educational qualifications in her election affidavit.

The matter was heard by Justice Krishna Rao, who dismissed the petition after hearing arguments.

Welcoming the court’s decision, Adhikari said, “We have received very good news from the High Court. The writ petition filed against our Nandigram candidate by a signboard party and the Trinamool Congress has been dismissed.”

The Nandigram contest has acquired particular political significance, with Rath being fielded by the BJP from the seat vacated by Adhikari after he retained Bhabanipur in south Kolkata in the 2026 Assembly elections.
