Nalgonda: Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy on Tuesday asked the farmers to take up cultivation of alternative crops to paddy under organic farming methods.
Inaugurating Farmers’ Production Organization (FPO) at Gangadevigudem of Kattangur mandal in the district, Jagadish Reddy said that usage of chemical fertilizers would erode the soil fertility, which would lead to decrease in crop production. He reminded that the farmers were getting irrigation facility and also getting 24-hour free electricity to agriculture in the state. The initiatives by the State government including restoration of irrigation tanks and filling them with the river water through canals have increased ground water level in the State. Hence, the cultivation area has been enhanced in ayacut and non-ayacut areas, he added.
Keeping in mind the situation, the farmers should take up the cultivation of alternative crops than paddy to get a good price for their produce. He asked the farmers to select the crops, which have good demand in the market, he added.
Rajya Sabha member Badugula Lingaiah Yadav, Nakrekal MLA Chirumarthi Lingaiah, District Agriculture Officer Sridhar Reddy and others also attended the programme.
