Hyderabad: The Tanmay Agarwal-led Hyderabad team continued its dream run as they pulled off a stunning last-ball three-wicket victory over formidable Delhi in the Elite Group E Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament at Sultanpur (Haryana) on Monday.
In a humdinger of a contest, Hyderabad survived a few anxious moments before the left-handed duo of Tanay Thyagarajan (17 not out, 2×6) and CV Milind (14 not out, 8b, 1×4, 1×6) took their team home by scoring 17 runs in the last over. This was Hyderabad’s fourth successive victory and thereby booked a place in the knock-out stage.
Delhi posted a challenging 170/5 in 20 overs and Hyderabad, at one stage, struggled before scampering home. Left-handed Tanmany yet again was among runs. He continued his brilliant form as he struck a 34-ball 54 (6×4, 2×6) but Test cricketer G Hanuma Vihari was out for four only, departing in the fourth over. However, Tanmay and young Tilak Varma resurrected the Hyderabad innings. They left-handed duo added 64 runs for the second wicket. But off-spinner Lalit Yadav broke the dangerous pair by trapping Tanmay in front. Tilak, who scored 62 not out in the last match, looked in good nick but after scoring 32-ball 37 (2×4, 2×6), he was sent back by left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan.
From 113/3, Hyderabad’s innings suddenly wobbled as T Ravi Teja, Himalay Agarwal, Pragnay Reddy and Buddhi Rahul fell in quick succession. Hyderabad were reduced to 138/7 in 17.1 overs and Delhi wrested the initiative. But Thyagarajan and Milind kept their nerves to dash Delh’s hopes.
Earlier, Hyderabad rested Test cricketer Mohammed Siraj and Ctl Rakshann was brought back into the team. Left-arm seamer Milind gave the first breakthrough for Hyderabad as he forced opener Dhruv Shenoy to edge behind and Pragnay did the rest. Anuj Rawat hit a quick-fire 33-ball 41 (6×4) as Delhi looked in control. Himmat Singh made 24 before he was dismissed by off-spinner Abdul Ela Al Quraishi. Vihari terminated Rawat’s innings.
Left-hander Nitish Rana 34 (27b, 4×4) and Kshitiz Sharma (26) boosted Delh’s total. Although he took two wickets, Milind proved expensive as conceded 49 runs in four overs. Quraishi bowled well to return with figures of 1/28 in four overs. Ravi Teja and Rakshann too came up with good spells.
Hyderabad play Uttar Pradesh in their league match on Tuesday (1.30 pm). New coach Milap Mewada was all praise for the team. “The boys showed a lot of character. Tanmay is in sublime form. He will make a mark this season. Even I’m impressed with Tilak Varma, who is a blossoming into a big-time player.’’
