Hyderabad: Skipper Tanmay Agarwal (62; 46b, 7×4, 1×6) led from the front while left-arm seamer CV Milind (3.2-0-8-5) picked up his second five-wicket haul to script Hyderabad’s fifth successive win when they defeated Uttar Pradesh by 29 runs in the Elite Group E Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 cricket tournament at Sultanpur (Haryana) on Tuesday.
Thanks to Tanmay’s brilliance with the willow, Hyderabad mustered a modest 147/7 in 20 overs. UP fumbled in their chase and were all out for 118 in 19.2 overs as Milind ended as chief wrecker.
With an all-win record in the six-team Group E, Hyderabad topped the table and qualified for the quarterfinals where they meet Gujarat in New Delhi. This was Hyderabad’s best performance in recent years. Tanmay (302 runs) is the leading run-getter of the tournament runs while Milind is the top wicket-taker with 16 wickets.
Although G Hanuma Vihari and Mohammed Siraj were out of the team, Hyderabad came up with an exemplary all-round show. Vihari, in all probability, will be in the India A team for South Africa tour while Siraj returned to Hyderabad and asked to be in quarantine to be ready for the coming home series against New Zealand.
It was yet again Tanmay who continued to dazzle with the bat. Opening the innings with Pragnay Reddy in the absence of Vihari, the pocket-dynamo flayed the UP attack. Pragnay lasted six balls but when Tanmay and Tilak Varma’s stand was blossoming, UP broke the crucial partnership. Varma was involved in a mix up to be run out for 13. The out-of-form Himalay Agarwal was out for a duck. B Sandeep and Tanmay took the score to 82 before the former was out for 18. Tanmay reached his 50 off 37 balls but departed in the 17th over. However, young Buddhi Rahul shored up the Hyderabad innings with a 29-ball 38 that gave Hyderabad a decent total.
Milind tasted success to set the tone for Hyderabad. Coming in the fifth over, the left-arm seamer sent back both the openers. Left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan got the important breakthrough by castling skipper Karn Sharma’s stumps and Sandeep, with his left-arm spin, reduced UP to 81 for 5 by scalping the wickets of Neri and Rinku Singh. Aksh Deep Nath kept UP in the hunt with a few lusty blows. But Ravi Teja sent back the dangerous Aksh Deep before Milind polished off the UP tail with three wickets in his second spell.
