The Central University of Karnataka has launched an inquiry into allegations that Assistant Professor Abdul Majeed coerced B.A. students to wear the hijab during a mosque visit. The complaint was filed by a legal advocacy group.

Sanjida Qadar, a lecturer at LJD Law College for the past three years, resigned on June 5, following allegations that the college authorities had instructed her not to wear a hijab at the workplace after May 31.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's announcement that he will lift the ban on hijab for students and college students (Class 11 and 12) has triggered a huge debate over the issue. The opposition BJP has indicated strife in the coming days.

Official sources said that a girl student lodged a police complaint alleging that a teacher approached her while she was seated in the classroom and forcibly removed and tore her hijab.

The protests largely died down earlier this year following a heavy crackdown in which over 500 protesters were killed and nearly 20,000 detained
