Nirmal police arrested seven members of an inter-state gang accused of stealing cattle by using anaesthesia and selling them to Maharashtra slaughterhouses. Vehicles, cash, and mobile phones were seized. The gang’s kingpin admitted forming it to make quick money.

As the panchayat failed to resolve the issue, the buffalo was left unattended on the road after which it walked to the home of its owner

The trigger for the violence was cattle theft, sparked by the animals trampling farmers' fields.
