Heavy rains were reported in the eastern half of Cuba, where authorities have evacuated thousands of people due to the risk of flooding.

The strongest typhoon of the year also triggered deadly landslides that buried a number of houses in the southern part of the most populous island of Luzon, officials said.

"Farmers should not face harassment of any kind at any level and the district magistrates have been given clear orders in this regard."

Rocks rained down on the barracks of a military station in Quang Tri province, with 22 soldiers believed to have been buried underneath thick mud, an official government website said.

Sources said that the farmers were stuck on the island following the rise in the flow of waters in the river at around 12 am.

According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) report, 7,348 recorded disasters occurred around the world in the last two decades.
