Investor sentiment was further buoyed by strong buying in blue-chip IT stocks. In early trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex surged 658.96 points to 80,254.55, while the NSE Nifty climbed 192.05 points to 24,359.30.

HDFC Securities has maintained a positive outlook for the industry.

A spurt in COVID-19 cases and lack of fresh buying triggers continued to weigh on sentiment, traders said.

However, observers cited that even volatility on account of profit booking will likely trigger in bottom fishing, thereby reigniting the up move.

Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were trading 0.45 per cent lower at USD 50.68 per barrel. 

The 30-share BSE index pared the gains to trade 202.44 points or 0.43 per cent lower at 46,758.25.

After touching its record intra-day peak of 46,373.34, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 154.45 points or 0.34 per cent higher at 46,253.46, its new closing record.

The 30-share BSE index was trading 365.19 points or 0.91 per cent lower at 39,557.27. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty tumbled 106.90 points or 0.91 per cent to 11,622.70.

The 30-share BSE index plummeted 1,066.33 points or 2.61 per cent to end at 39,728.41

The 30-share index was trading 452.15 points or 1.13 per cent higher at 40,331.10, and the NSE Nifty soared 117.50 points or 1 per cent to 11,856.35.
