Weak monsoon rains have resulted in only a marginal rise in groundwater levels across north-eastern Hyderabad, raising concerns over water availability. Officials and residents’ welfare associations have flagged indiscriminate borewell drilling and excessive groundwater extraction as major concerns.
Groundwater levels in several Hyderabad localities have declined sharply ahead of summer, raising fears of a water crisis. Tanker demand and water supply complaints have also increased, signalling rising pressure on the city’s water resources.
