Praneeth, who won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championship, is the only men's singles shuttler to have qualified for the Tokyo Games.

The 34-year old Humpy, currently ranked number three in the world, has qualified for the FIDE Women's Candidates event next year.

The two had also been recommended for the Khel Ratna last year.

"The award definitely means a lot to me but we also have to take a stand for things we believe in," he said.
