The West Bengal forest department has begun restoring 1,600 hectares of illegally encroached mangrove forest in the Sundarbans by demolishing unauthorised fisheries and replanting saplings. Authorities are also investigating an alleged nexus involving fish farm owners, politicians and corrupt officials

The Sundarbans is also an ecologically fragile and climatically vulnerable region that is home to over 45 lakh people.
