The Parliamentary joint committee on simultaneous elections, chaired by PP Chaudhary, is working to evolve a mechanism to implement the ‘One Nation, One Election’ reform by the 2029 general polls. Chaudhary said nearly 99 percent of civil society stakeholders consulted so far support the proposal.
Addressing a briefing on the deliberations of the first meeting of the reconstituted Congress Working Committee (CWC) here, party leader P Chidambaram said the BJP does not have the numbers to pass the required constitutional amendments for holding simultaneous polls.
The government has scheduled a Special Session of Parliament from September 18-22, during which it is anticipated that a bill related to this proposal may be introduced for implementation.
