This is the eighth increase in rates since November 20 when oil companies resumed daily price revision after nearly two-week hiatus.

The prices increased for five consecutive days before going for a day's pause on Wednesday. It has risen on both days thereafter.

In three days, petrol price has gone up by 40 paise and diesel rates have risen by 61 paise per litre.

On Friday, petrol price was raised by 17 paise per litre and diesel by 22 paise.

The incident happened sometime late on Friday night when the duo - Avinash R. Rajure, 25 and Savitra D. Ankulkar, 22, were riding on a motorcycle from Pune to their home in Shelgaon village, Nanded, district, for Diwali celebrations

While demand for petrol has been more resilient than diesel due to an increased preference for using personal vehicles instead of public transport to follow distancing norms.
