Congress' Moga in-charge Malvika Sood, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Punjab assembly polls from the Moga seat, had also asked party workers not to attend the rally.

"Petty perish pump politics loaded with selfish vested interests should be discarded for safeguarding our DEMOCRACY," he posted on X.

In a one-line resignation to party President Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu wrote, "I hereby resign as President (PPCC)."

After taking charge at the state Congress headquarters, the cricketer-turned-politician said there is no difference between an ordinary worker of the party and its state unit chief.

Gandhi underscored the need for improving the food procurement and Public Distribution System and acknowledged that they had shortcomings.
