Around 10.30 a.m., Sensex was trading at 46,867.57, higher by 423.39 points or 0.91 per cent from its previous close of 46,444.18.

Traders said the domestic unit is weak tracking tepid cued from most regional currencies on concerns that a infectious new coronavirus strain could slow down the prospects of a global economic recovery.

Around 10.25 a.m., Sensex was trading at 46,206.80, higher by 200.11 points or 0.43 per cent from its previous close of 46,006.69.

Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were trading 0.45 per cent lower at USD 50.68 per barrel. 

The 30-share BSE index pared the gains to trade 202.44 points or 0.43 per cent lower at 46,758.25.

In the previous session, the rupee strengthened by 3 paise to close at 73.56 against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading up 0.21 per cent at 90.01.

ONGC was the top laggard in the Sensex pack, shedding around 3 per cent, followed by IndusInd Bank, HDFC twins, Bajaj Finance and Kotak Bank.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.44 per cent lower at 90.05.

UltraTech Cement was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising around 1 per cent, followed by Sun Pharma, IndusInd Bank, Reliance Industries and HDFC.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.03 per cent lower at 90.44.

In the Sensex pack, Mahindra and Mahindra, Asian Paints, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, ONGC and HDFC were the prominent gainers.

Axis Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding around 2 per cent, followed by ONGC, M&M, ICICI Bank, Asian Paints, SBI, HUL, L&T, Titan, Infosys and TCS.

ONGC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying around 3 per cent, followed by Tata Steel, L&T, Sun Pharma, M&M, ICICI Bank and NTPC.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading down 0.20 per cent at 90.79.

On Thursday, the rupee snapped its two-day winning streak to close 9 paise lower at 73.66 against the US dollar.

ONGC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying around 6 per cent, followed by SBI, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC and Reliance Industries.

The 30-share BSE index was trading 254.72 points or 0.55 per cent lower at 45,848.78.

ITC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising around 2 per cent, followed by ONGC, TCS, Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finserv and NTPC.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.07 per cent to 90.85.
