At the interbank forex market, the domestic currency opened up at 74.04 against the US dollar, then edged slightly lower to 74.05 in early deals, a rise of 10 paise over its last close.

After touching its lifetime intra-day peak of 42,645.33, the 30-share BSE index ended 704.37 points or 1.68 per cent higher at 42,597.43

All Sensex components closed in the green, led by banking, finance, energy, IT and metal counters. SBI was the top gainer, soaring 5.63 per cent following robust Q2 results.

Losses in domestic stock markets and uncertainty ahead of US presidential election weighed on the investor sentiment, traders said.

Reliance Industries was the top laggard, tanking over 4 per cent, followed by HCL Tech, TCS, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, Infosys and HUL.

NTPC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising around 2 per cent, followed by Nestle India, HCL Tech, ONGC, SBI, M&M, TCS and Reliance Industries.

Lacklustre cues from global markets also kept domestic investors on the edge, traders said. The 30-share BSE Sensex ended 172.61 points or 0.43 per cent lower at 39,749.85.

The 30-share BSE index was trading 365.19 points or 0.91 per cent lower at 39,557.27. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty tumbled 106.90 points or 0.91 per cent to 11,622.70.
