Defending champion Iga Swiatek recovered from a second-set setback to beat Taylor Townsend in three sets and reach the Wimbledon second round. Amanda Anisimova and Karolina Pliskova also advanced comfortably with straight-set victories in their opening matches

Swiatek, the 2022 US Open champion, saved three set points in the second-set tiebreak to secure a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory in 1 hour and 52 minutes at Flushing Meadows. In their first encounter, Rakhimova showed some promise, despite the match initially looking like a one-sided affair after Swiatek quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead, losing just three points.

At the Vantaa Energia Areena, the two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu defeated the Japanese shuttler with a score of 21-13, 21-6.

Manika returned to beat 94th-ranked Tin-Tin Ho of Britain 4-0 in her singles opener while Sutirtha made a strong impression on her Olympics debut with a come from behind 4-3 win against 78th-ranked Linda Bergstrom of Sweden.
