New York: “Godzilla Minus Zero”, the sequel to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning blockbuster “Godzilla Minus One”, will have its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala presentation at the 64th New York Film Festival.

The film will premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 26, with Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew expected to attend.

The festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center in partnership with Rolex, will run from September 25 to October 12.

Set in 1949, two years after the events of “Godzilla Minus One”, the sequel continues the story of the Shikishima family as they confront a new catastrophe in post-World War II Japan.

“It is truly an honor to introduce our film to a global audience for the first time in a place of such history and prestige. I am filled with both awe and excitement to see how far the power of Japan’s Godzilla can terrify audiences around the world, and whether they will resonate with what lies beyond that fear,” Yamazaki said in a statement.

“Godzilla Minus One”, released in 2023, reimagined the iconic Japanese monster franchise through the story of Koichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot haunted by survivor’s guilt as a devastated post-war Japan confronts the emergence of Godzilla.

The film, starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada and Hidetaka Yoshioka, was a critical and commercial success, grossing over USD 110 million worldwide.

It also made history at the 96th Academy Awards by becoming the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar, taking home the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Dennis Lim, artistic director of the New York Film Festival, said Yamazaki has continued to breathe new life into the long-running franchise.

“More than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there’s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror,” Lim said.

“Like its predecessor, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year’s NYFF Spotlight Gala,” he added.

The sequel will be released internationally by GKIDS.
