Hyderabad: Since the Covid-19 pandemic started, there has been a lot of buzz on the importance of mental health. In this new-normal, it is crucial to understand this and act accordingly to ensure positivity and good health.

“There are many triggering factors for Covid-19 related anxiety, from the death toll, fear of infection, fear of isolation, and many more. Adding to these are the elements of societal stigma associated with the disease and issues arising from isolation and loneliness. In fact, there have also been several patients who said their relationships got affected due to being isolated,” says city-based neuropsychiatrist Dr Charan Teja Koganti.

Small things can go a long way in keeping anxiety and negativity at bay, ensuring you have hope and courage to get through these trying times. Staying away from toxic elements in news, keeping a limit on social media consumption and ensuring you have a healthy relationship with your loved ones will ensure good mental health.

Other things that will ensure good mental health are sticking to a schedule and also ensuring proper nutrition. “Staying indoors will cause Vitamin D deficiency and that will also cause anxiety issues. Even if you are isolated, it is good to ensure the windows are open and you have good light and ventilation. Apart from this, working from home changes a daily schedule so it is important to have a schedule of work, fun, exercise and family time,” Dr Charan says.

“Even if you are isolated or your family members are isolated, it is crucial to make sure they don’t feel left out. Have video calls even if they are in the next room and make sure they don’t feel alone. It will make sure they feel mentally strong,” he advises. Having a proper sleep schedule also contributes to mental and physical health.
