Tamil Nadu’s Arnav holds GM Laxman to a draw in Hyderabad chess tourney

Hyderabad: Unheralded Arnav Maheswari of Tamil Nadu held top seed Grandmaster RR Laxman to a draw in the fifth round of the 3rd Hyderabad All India Open FIDE Rating Tournament, Joy International School, Bachupally, on Monday.

However, eight players — International Master Gusain Himal, IM Ratnakaran, IM Saravana Krishnan, Kaustuv Kundu, Dhananjay, Arpan Das, Harsh Suresh and Avhad Prajwal — are in the lead with 5 points at the end of the fifth round. GM RR Laxman, CM Kusagra mohan, CM Niraj Saripalli are in the second spot with 4.5 points.

On the Top Board, Maheswari forced Laxman to a draw in Kings Indian defense, Orthodox variation in 37 moves. On 10th move Laxman exchanged Queens. On 37th move in Knight vs Bishop and pawns ending, Laxman offered a draw, where Arnav Maheswari agreed.

On the Second board, the game between Harshit Pawar and IM Himal Gisaun, on 19th move black exchanged Queens, on 41st move in Double Rooks and Pawns ending, black got advantage and on 45th move Black got one pawn up and on 52nd Black got second pawn and won the game in 85 moves.

On the third board, the game between Shivansh Tiwari and IM Ratnakaran of Benoni defense, on 18th White sacrificed an exchange and got some positional advantage till 38th move. On 39th move white opened ‘g’ file and that gave a chance Black to exchange pieces; on 50th move white resigned where he was exchange and one pawn down.

Important results (5th round): GM R.R Laxman (4.5) drew with Arnav Maheswari (TN), Harshit pawar (4) lost to IM Gusain Himal (5), 3. Shivansh Tiwari (4) lost to IM Ratnakaran (5), IM Saravan Krishnan (5) bt Divyabharathi . M (4), Joy Antony (4) lost to Kaustuv Kundu (5).
